Election General Information

Beginning January 2018, voters in Iowa will be required to provide proof of identification - or sign an oath verifying their identity when voting at the polls.

 

Primary Elections are held in even number years in June.  A Primary election is held for members of political parties to nominate candidates for the upcoming General Election.

 

The General Election is held in even-numbered years to elect federal and state officers, members of Congress and the General Assembly, county and township officers, and other officers as provided by law.  It is also held to decide public measures at the city and county level, as well as to vote on statewide public measures and constitutional amendments.

 

A City Election is an election that occurs bi-annually on odd number years in November. A City election is used to elect the Mayor and Council Members for specific cities in Cedar County.  

 

A School Election is an election held every two years in September. School Elections are used to elect school board members for specific school districts located in and adjacent to Cedar County. Periodically a School Election ballot may also contain a "Public Measure" question in regard to School District budget, levying authority, or other District operations.

 

A Special Election is any election that is not a regular scheduled election called for by any taxing authority in Cedar County for specific purposes as defined by the Code of Iowa.

 Requirements to vote.

To vote in Iowa, you must be registered to vote. To qualify to register to vote, you must be:

 

  • A U.S. citizen,

  • An Iowa resident, and

  • At least 17 1/2 years old (must be 18 years old by election day to vote.)

 

 

You cannot vote:

 

  • Be a convicted felon (unless your voting rights have been restored),

  • Be judged mentally incompetent to vote by a court, or

  • Claim the right to vote in any other place.

 How do I vote absentee?

Any registered voter in Iowa may request an absentee ballot through their county auditor. Please contact your county auditor for hours of operations and locations.
